This month saw an extended Surrey Heartlands Academy clinical forum that welcomed a team from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) who shared some of their considerable expertise about quality improvement. The IHI is an independent, not-for-profit organisation recognised internationally as a leading healthcare improvement innovator.

The IHI is particularly known as the generator of the Triple Aim concept for better health, better experience and better value. The Triple Aim framework serves as the foundation for organizations and communities to successfully navigate the transition from a focus on health care to optimizing health for individuals and populations. To deliver high quality outcomes, the Surrey Heartlands Clinical Academy supports clinicians with the adoption and spread of innovation and best practice, by working beyond organisational boundaries to open doors to solutions that will improve outcomes in health and social care.

Dr Mark Hamilton, Executive Clinical Director at Surrey Heartlands Health & Care Partnership and its Clinical Academy, said: “As our partnership matures, we need to think about quality improvement at a system-wide level, as we build capacity and capability across all of our organisations. There is already excellent quality improvement work going on across our partnership and part of the IHI’s work is to map this.

“The IHI helped us to map the strengths across our partnership, and to identify any gaps. They also focused on developing our shared understanding by supporting the development of quality improvement skills in our senior leadership and working with specific populations to demonstrate how quality improvement is done at scale and as a system.”

The IHI team was a group of four with international expertise including Pedro Delgado, MSc, Head of IHI’s Europe and Latin America regions. Mr Delgado has worked on the design and implementation of large-scale health system improvement efforts and networks globally.

Afterwards one delegate commented: “There certainly was a lot of energy in the room and a desire to press on together on our Quality Improvement journey as Surrey Heartlands Health and Care Partnership.  A very special thank you to the IHI team for sharing their knowledge and for facilitating some great discussions at the forum and throughout the time they’ve spent with us.”
