The NHS Guildford & Waverley Clinical Commissioning Group DESMOND team has just been shortlisted for the Team of the Year category in the Celebrating DESMOND Awards 2019.
DESMOND stands for Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed and it is a family of self-management education modules, toolkits and care pathways for people with Type 2 diabetes or at risk of developing it.
Managed by the Royal Surrey County Hospital, the local DESMOND Programme also offers training and quality assurance for healthcare professionals and lay educators to deliver any of the DESMOND modules and toolkits to people in their local communities.
DESMOND Director Bernie Stribling said: “The standards were high and the quality of entries is a testament to all of the hard, dedicated and innovative work being carried out by DESMOND teams.
“We launched the Celebrating DESMOND Annual Awards programme to applaud and share good practice. As well as rewarding excellence, we will also be using the awards as an opportunity to promote engagement and ensure key learning is disseminated.”
Karen Mackie, a Community Diabetes Dietitian with the Guildford and Waverley DESMOND team, said: “NHS Guildford and Waverly CCG have supported the DESMOND program within our locality since 2013. Since the advent of the Surrey Heartlands funding and promotion for structured education, our team has been supported to grow and innovate to support the local population. We have expanded from four facilitators to ten since 2017 and we have tripled the provision of courses.”
The winners will be revealed at the inaugural Celebrating Desmond Conference event at the Leicester Diabetes Centre on October 3 2019.
