The Government’s Challenge on Dementia looks forward to England being a world recognised dementia research centre by 2020. In Surrey, around 17,000 people are already estimated to have the condition with this figure set to rise to around 19,000 by 2020.

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is contributing directly to the establishment of England as a global leader in dementia research. And now it is calling for additional research participants to accept an invitation to take part in a range of dementia studies.

Surrey and Borders Partnership has already been awarded the prestigious HSJ  Award for its Technology Integrated Health Management (TIHM) for dementia trial which is led by the Trust, working in partnership with the University of Surrey, smart home monitoring  provider Howz and the Alzheimer’s Society

This project combines technology with clinical expertise to bolster support for people with dementia and for their carers. Those participating in the trial have had a network of small devices installed in their homes. The devices collect physiological, behavioural and environmental data 24/7, including blood pressure, temperature, hydration and movement inside and outside of the home. The data is analysed and presented on a digital dashboard which is monitored by a monitoring team.

Director of Innovation and Development at Surrey and Borders, Professor Helen Rostill said: “Taking part in research can really help the NHS to develop improvements in the care and support it offers.  We hope you will get involved in our research programme so that together we can make things better for everyone.

“Our award winning team is passionate about research and we encourage you to get in touch with us for an informal chat if you are interested in finding out more about our studies, or if you want to know how to get involved. We are experts in what we do and can answer your questions or help with any concerns you may have.”
