Ophthalmology is a priority area for NHS England in their work with providers and CCGs.  Surrey Heartlands commission the following locally commissioned services (LCS’) from High Street

Guildford and Waverley and Surrey Downs CCGs commission MECS (Minor Eye Conditions Service), which is available for patients with a number of conditions such as red eye, dry, gritty uncomfortable eyes and irritated/inflamed eyes.  Healthcare professionals can refer patients to the service or they can self-refer.  This service has been extremely popular with patients and healthcare professionals as it means patients can be seen and treated quickly, locally and with no GP referral or A&E attendance needed.   The majority of patients are successfully treated then discharged, instead of being referred onwards to the Hospital Eye Service, which previously caused delays in treatment.

There are also other LCS’ available at High Street Opticians in Surrey Heartlands such as:

  • Glaucoma Referral Refinement Service
  • Direct Cataract Referral
  • Direct Wet AMD Referral

The Guildford and Waverley Community Gynaecology Service (GWCGS) is a community based service, which has been running since 2014.

The aim of the service is to improve access for women with gynaecological needs, and provide women with the care they need without having to attend the hospital.  The service is accessible to all patients registered with a GP in Guildford and Waverley.

The service has been well-received and in 2018 won the Women’s Health Initiative Award.
